Here's a statistic worth sitting with: roughly half of all CRM (customer relationship management system) rollouts fail to deliver on their value.* What's additionally striking is that it almost never comes down to the software. Systems fail because they’re overwhelming. Every feature switched on at once, every field waiting to be filled, every workflow to learn before anything else can happen. Your staff takes one look, decides the old spreadsheet was easier and quietly goes back to it. The expensive new platform becomes the expensive new toy nobody plays with.

Fear of that pattern is why many small nonprofits assume a modern tech stack is out of reach: too pricey, too complicated, too much. But the organizations that succeed in getting this right are the ones that buy only what they need right now, then grow from there, not the ones that buy the most or fight their way up the learning curve.

Idlewild Partners, a technology and consulting firm specializing in implementing and optimizing Salesforce for mission-driven businesses, calls this approach "Crawl, Walk, Run," and Staci Rice, the company’s founder and CEO, laid it out in a recent guest post for us. It's the backbone of this month's webinar.

What the webinar covers

This is a joint session with Idlewild Partners, co-hosted by Mike Spadaro, Give Lively’s acquisition and partnerships lead, and Staci Rice, who will tap into her firm’s experience helping more than 350 nonprofits get Salesforce right. Here's what we'll get into.

Right-sizing your stack

We'll open with a question that saves organizations a lot of money: What's the smallest version of a system that solves your actual problems today? "Crawl, Walk, Run" is about matching your tools to what your organization is now, not what a sales demo says you should be.

A live demo of tools that fit together

We’ll walk through Idlewild’s Salesforce Nonprofit Accelerator (NPA), a flexible alternative to Salesforce's Nonprofit Cloud, demonstrating how it integrates with Give Lively's free fundraising tools. You’ll see first-hand what a lean, connected setup looks like in practice rather than in theory.

Honest talk on cost and timelines

No vague promises. We'll get specific about what starting small actually costs, how long a sensible rollout takes and where the real money goes. (Hint: It's rarely the licensing.)

Live Q&A

Bring your questions, whether they're about your current setup, your data, your budget or what's realistic for a team your size. We'll leave plenty of room to dig in.

Why smaller is the smarter play

It's tempting to assume that spending more upfront means fewer headaches later. In practice, however, paying for features before anyone needs them can be the cause of low program adoption rates and system clutter.

A right-sized and right-priced stack works differently. You build an affordable, manageable foundation your team can actually learn, value is quickly demonstrated and you have lots of room (and budget) to add capability as real needs surface. Adoption is what makes a system worth having and adoption comes from tools people find useful, not from long feature lists. Think of your setup as a seedling you tend and re-pot as you grow, not a full-grown tree you plant once and forget.

What an affordable stack actually looks like

The part that surprises people is how little a capable starting stack can cost.

Salesforce's “Power of Us” program donates 10 free licenses to eligible nonprofits, which puts the CRM itself within reach for most organizations. The Give Lively fundraising platform is free for nonprofits too, with no setup fees, no platform fees and no subscriptions. So is our native Salesforce integration, which syncs your donation data automatically and comes with an implementation team to help you set it up. Yes, you read that right. Plenty of fundraising platforms treat a Salesforce integration as a paid add-on. Ours doesn't.

From there, Idlewild's NPA is a lean template to build on, rather than a box overstuffed with features to unpack. You start clean and customize only as far as you need to. Put those pieces together and a small nonprofit can run a modern, connected stack for a fraction of what the horror stories suggest. The real investment isn't the software; it's the thoughtful setup and the adoption that make your team want to log in and learn.

Start where you are

You don't need a six-figure budget or a sprawling system to fundraise well. You need tools that suit your situation, that talk to each other and that your team will use. This webinar is a practical look at how to get there, one deliberate step at a time.

Join us on July 30. If the timing doesn't work, register anyway and we'll send you the recording.
