Learn about three nonprofits strengthening communities through financial opportunities and education

Every month in 2024, and now into 2025, we have highlighted the work of Give Lively member nonprofits in one category of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. This is the final installment of the series.

The United Nations website states that “the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)... are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.”
We find inspiration and insight from these selected nonprofits and hope you do too. Is your nonprofit engaged in similar work? Use the feedback tool at the bottom of this article to tell us about it.

SDG Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development
The nonprofits

Boston Impact Initiative Fund
This nonprofit impact investment fund works to build a future where entrepreneurs of color and their communities have the financial, social and political power to create a sustainable, inclusive and equitable economy for generations to come. To achieve this, the Boston Impact Initiative Fund (BII) invests in social enterprises and community-controlled real estate, thereby increasing wealth and asset-building opportunities for communities of color. BII is also transforming the impact investing field through field-building and education so that economic and racial justice becomes integral to any community-centered investment strategy.

Financial Women of San Francisco
This organization advances professionalism in finance and financial services by promoting the development, career progress and leadership of women. Financial Women of San Francisco (FWSF) accomplishes this by providing a public forum for examination of important contemporary issues in business, finance, governmental policy and civic affairs; a broad-based network of contacts for women in the field and encouraging camaraderie and cooperation; professional development and leadership opportunities for women; and financial support through its Scholarship Fund to women studying for careers in finance.

Local Initiatives Support Corp.
This nonprofit equips struggling communities with the capital, strategy and know-how to become places where people can thrive. Local Initiatives Support Corp. works with local leaders to invest in housing, health, education, public safety and employment – all basic needs that must be tackled at once so that progress in one is not undermined by neglect in another. Its approach is comprehensive, data-driven, and – most importantly – guided by what community members want for themselves, their families and the places they call home.
