What is a QR code?

A QR code is a visual code usually composed of many black and white squares within a larger square that can be deciphered by your phone’s camera. As a practical fundraising application for nonprofits, a QR code is an easy way to share a fundraising page URL. Donors need only pull out a phone and open its camera to scan the QR code. They are then able to tap the link that appears and donate through the fundraising page it opens.

How to create a QR code

Give Lively does not currently have a product that can generate a QR code for you. However, there are many easy ways to create them using free Web-based tools.

Create a QR code using Chrome

If you use Google Chrome as your browser:

  • Right-click on the webpage for which you wish to generate a QR code.
  • Select "Create QR Code for this Page."

You have the option of copying or downloading the QR code.

More QR code customization is possible through a wide variety of free programs. Here are a few to start with though you are encouraged to search for what suits your needs. Some of these programs may have paid options.

Best practices with QR codes

Visible and accessible

QR codes are meant to be scanned by mobile phone cameras. They should be placed where they are highly visible to and accessible by donors, such as the corner of a gala program, on a poster at the front desk of a physical location or on signage.

Avoid adding to emails

It is best to avoid adding QR codes to emails. Many donors access their email from their phones and won’t be able to scan the QR code. If it is important for the QR code to appear in an email, be sure to add the full clickable page URL as well.
