How do I reallocate unfulfillable donations in the Give Lively User Portal?

This FAQ addresses Give Lively’s role in processing donations through Charity Navigator’s Giving Basket and may not apply to all Give Lively members.

Some donations initiated through Charity Navigator’s Giving Basket, which is powered by Give Lively, can’t be fulfilled as originally directed by the donor. This is because state and/or federal law has designated the beneficiary nonprofit as not eligible to receive donations.

In these cases, donors receive an email notification from Give Lively advising that, in keeping with the same laws, they have 30 days from the date of the email to reallocate the unfulfillable donations. All donation reallocations take place in the Give Lively User Portal, a secure online tool for everyone who has contributed to a nonprofit through Give Lively technology. You may already have claimed your User Portal account or you may need to create one.

Unfortunately, a refund to the donor is not a legally permitted remedy.

After 30 days, if the donor takes no action, the funds are re-granted to an eligible nonprofit selected by the Give Lively Foundation, Give Lively’s partner charity, at its sole discretion.

There are no additional transaction fees for reallocations.

How to view a list of unfulfillable donations

  1. Log in to the User Portal.
  2. Select “Donation Reallocation” in the left-hand navigation.

At the top of the list of unfulfillable donations is a summary showing:

  • Amount – the total value of the listed unfulfillable donations
  • Donation Count – the total number of unfulfillable donations
  • Action – a button to “Select New Recipient"

Each donation in need of reallocation is then itemized below with the following:

  • the name of the nonprofit
  • the total value and number of unfulfillable donations to that nonprofit.

By clicking on the caret to the left of the nonprofit name, additional details are revealed about each of the unfulfillable donations to that nonprofit:

How to take action on reallocating donations

  • From the list of unfulfillable donations, click the “Select New Recipient” button.
  • This takes you to the Select New Recipient page where you can select a nonprofit to which you wish to reallocate your unfulfillable donations.
Important note: You can only select one nonprofit to receive all of your currently-identified unfulfillable donations. In the event of future unfulfillable donations, you may choose a different nonprofit at that time to receive those unfulfillable donations, but we do not currently support multiple beneficiaries for these funds.
  • Identify the nonprofit of your choice. Use the search tool to pick an option from a database of more than 60,000 eligible nonprofits – all Give Lively members or nonprofits that have previously received donations through Charity Navigator’s Giving Basket. You can also pick from the initial selection of nonprofits curated by Give Lively.
  • To proceed with the reallocation, click on the selected new recipient.
  • This takes you to a Reallocation Summary page confirming the details of the reallocation: recipient nonprofit’s name, the total amount and the date.
  • Click on the “Reallocate” button.
  • This executes the reallocation request and automatically leads back to the Unfulfilled Donations page, where a banner advises that the donations were “Successfully Reallocated.” The summary on the page also shows that there are no unfulfilled donations at that time.

How to confirm a reallocation

Donors do not receive an email notification or an updated receipt once a reallocation is made. You can however confirm the reallocation request through the User Portal.

  • Select “Payment History” in the left-hand navigation of the User Portal.
  • Identify the donation whose reallocation you wish to confirm and click on “View Receipt”
  • On the receipt page, associated with the reallocated donation are the following:
    • an arrow showing that the donation was reallocated to a new nonprofit (the one you chose or, if no action was taken within 30 days, then a nonprofit selected by the Give Lively Foundation)
    • a note that “This donation was reallocated to the new recipient nonprofit. There are no fees for this service, and no further action is needed at this time.”
    • a status badge letting you know whether the reallocation is “Pending Disbursement” or “Sent.” (A “Reallocation Requested” badge notes an unfulfilled donation in need of reallocation.)
