Thanks to recent updates in a third party’s technology, we have made two helpful improvements:

  • Apple Pay is now accepted as a payment method on all of our products, including Branded Donation Widgets, and
  • it appears, as does Google Pay, as an option alongside all others on the Payment Method screen of our donation form.

Donations made using digital wallets

We take pride in our very early adoption of Apple Pay and Google Pay as approved payment methods for donations. Very few other nonprofit fundraising platforms were exploring the viability of digital wallets when we placed them front and center on the fundraising pages we power.

Apple Pay and Google Pay are triggered if detected by a payment page or widget as follows:

  • Apple Pay: If donors have enabled Apple Pay, it appears as a payment method on iPhones or iPads (iOS 10 or later) using Safari and Touch ID or Face ID, and Macs (macOS Sierra or later) with Touch ID.
  • Google Pay: If donors have enabled Google Pay, it appear as a payment method when using any Chrome or Android devices running Chrome 61 or newer.

Apple Pay in iframes

One early obstacle to the universal use of digital wallets across all of our fundraising pages and widgets was the inability to use Apple Pay on our Branded Donation Widgets. This was due to restrictions imposed by Apple and our primary payment processor, Stripe, about widgets that appear in an iframe on a nonprofit’s website.

As of this month, however, the restrictions have been lifted. With one exception, Apple Pay now joins Google Pay as a payment method on all donation pages and widgets powered by Give Lively. The one exception is both Apple Pay and Google Pay are never available in widgets on websites hosted by Wix.

"We've eagerly awaited the day we could introduce Apple Pay for donors within our iframe-based widgets,” commented Matthew Connelly, Give Lively VP of Product. "This limitation had always been a thorn in our side, but not any more!"

Digital wallets moved to Payment Method screen

As familiarity with digital wallets has increased since we made them available as payment methods, we’ve moved  them to appear as options alongside all others on the Payment Method screen of our donation forms. This makes it easy for donors to choose their preferred path.

"This also ensures that our second-generation payment form allows donors to give anonymously and dedicate their donations regardless of the payment method chosen," added Connelly. “This wasn’t possible before now with digital wallets."
