Sync your calendars, set your clocks and ready your paddles. Today marks 12 weeks until GivingTuesday, the annual global day of charitable giving set for the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Every week between now and then, there are steps to take in paced preparation for such an important day.

This is your Give Lively guide to navigating that GivingTuesday development process, and it works a little like a flowchart. Each stage identifies a priority action, asks whether you've already done it and then, whether the answer is yes or no, branches to the next step.

The flow itself is the strategy: 12 weeks is plenty of water current to work with, but only if the work happens at a steady pace, without getting dammed up and released all at once in a late-November torrent.

Below, section by section, we point you to the priority actions to tackle first, the Give Lively resources that walk you through them and where to go once each one is done.

⛵️ But first: why the next 12 weeks matter more than GivingTuesday itself

GivingTuesday isn't a finish line and, likewise, the planning is about more than just one day. Up to 30% of annual giving happens in December, after GivingTuesday, and 10 to 12% lands in the final three days of the year.

Treated right, GivingTuesday is therefore the launch pad for all of December, not a one-day sprint. The flow keeps moving, which is the whole premise behind this countdown. Embrace that as you put all the pieces in place.

Preliminary priority action: build your GivingTuesday game plan

Build a GivingTuesday game plan covers the eight facets of a solid plan:

  • fundraising goals
  • board participation
  • matching gifts
  • communication channels
  • your core narrative
  • creative assets
  • email segmentation
  • success metrics.

It's a checklist for everything else in this post.

Have you built a game plan yet?

NO
Start with the 4-Phase Game Plan
YES
Strengthen the plan you have
Go to the free GivingTuesday Game Plan on-demand webinar and its companion 4-Phase Game Plan PDF guide. They map the full year-end arc into four phases:
* pre-game
* game day
* post-game
* overtime
The PDF guide includes a week-by-week email calendar and built-in donor outreach templates. Use it as your outline rather than starting with a blank page.
(1) Go back to the PDF
Pay special attention to phases 3 (post-game) and 4 (overtime). These phases are shortchanged by most plans, which overindex on GivingTuesday itself.
(2) Ground your plan in this year's reality
Harness GivingTuesday to thrive in tough times and Kick off preparation for GivingTuesday and beyond make the case for why your campaigns carry extra weight, and why your community and the innovation your nonprofit brings to it matter as much as the dollar total.

⛵️ Weeks 1-3: get the fundamentals in place

This is the unglamorous but essential stretch. Your fundraising pages, your tech stack and your donor data need to be in shape before any storytelling or outreach can land well. Skip this and the whole flow backs up further down the line.

Priority action: optimize your Campaign Pages

Three key ways to optimize a Campaign Page analyzes what a strong page needs at this stage:

  • a clear, evocative description
  • suggested donation amounts tied to concrete impact
  • a call to action that doesn't make donors hunt for it.

Have your fundraising pages been optimized yet?

NO
See the article above for details
YES
Strengthen the plan you have
The article walks through each fix, but the short version is:
* your page description should do real narrative work (it should be more than a boilerplate)
* your suggested amounts should each map to something a donor can picture
* your donation buttons should be impossible to miss on any device.
(1) See the fuller context
How to run a GivingTuesday campaign puts optimized pages into the fuller planning context – everything from board readiness to social strategy.
(2) Review your tech stack
The Building a Modern Fundraising Tech Stack on-demand webinar and PDF guide walk through a framework for making sure your customer relationship management (CRM) platform and digital marketing (email and social) tools can support your fundraising pages. The accessibility best practices on-demand webinar and PDF guide are also valuable, while there's still time to fix what you find, rather than after donors encounter issues.

⛵️ Weeks 4-6: set goals, build your team, line up tools

This is when GivingTuesday stops being a one-person project, if it started as one. Your board, volunteers and business contacts all need lead time, and the setup for matching gifts doesn't happen overnight.

Priority action: mobilize your board

Mobilizing your board for a successful GivingTuesday campaign lays out seven steps:

  • communicate early
  • be specific and direct about what you're asking for
  • treat board members as VIP donors
  • consider a board-led matching challenge
  • tie the campaign to annual goals
  • plan to track and celebrate results
  • prepare to steward the donors your board brings in.

Has your board been activated yet?

NO
See the article above for details
YES
Strengthen the plan you have
TThe article provides sample language and a structure for each of those seven steps, but the core moves are this:
* get every board member to donate something before the campaign launches
* get each of them to commit to reaching out to three to five personal contacts.
That combination of personal generosity and direct outreach is what turns a board from a governance body into a fundraising asset.
(1) Turn on peer-to-peer fundraising
Put your newly activated board and your volunteers to work as peer-to-peer fundraisers. The best way to accomplish this is to read the following:
(2) Pivot to matching gifts and business partnerships
These need to be locked in now even though you won't promote them until later. The following articles walk through finding a sponsor and setting the terms:

⛵️ Weeks 7-9: tell your story, mobilize your community

With the fundamentals and the team in place, it’s time to give your campaign its voice. The story you settle on is the current that carries through every email, social post and fundraising “ask" between now and the end of the year.

Priority action: draft your core impact story and messaging

Find the right words for GivingTuesday (and all-year-round) messaging makes the case for being concise, connecting emotionally, using concrete examples and asking directly rather than hedging.

Once your story's set, Give Lively's GivingTuesday Canva templates give you a fast way to turn it into on-brand graphics for email, Instagram and more. The template editing walkthrough instructs how to customize them if you haven't used Canva before.

Have your core story and messaging been drafted yet?

YES
Strengthen the plan you have
The article article breaks down what each of the qualities looks like in practice, but the shortcut is this:
* pick one anchor story and one clear “ask"
* build every piece of communication around that same pairing rather than juggling multiple narratives.
How to use donor psychology to improve your giving campaigns goes deeper on why a chosen story works, including social proof and personal connection as the psychological levers behind it.
(1) Double check against the fuller context
All donors welcome: powering community growth is a useful check on whether your story speaks to the full range of donors you want to reach. GivingTuesday revelation: the most valuable asset in the age of AI is our humanity is also worth a read; it urges use of AI tools for speed, but pushes back on letting them flatten the human specificity that makes your story work.
(2) Adapt your story for multiple channels
Nonprofit social media strategy ideas for GivingTuesday explains how to translate a narrative into platform-specific posts.

⛵️ Weeks 10-11: line up partners, activate matches, lock in logistics

The channels are dredged. Now it's about keeping the flow moving, turning what you prepared during weeks 4 through 6 into visible, active momentum and battening down anything that's still loose before the final week arrives.

Priority action: secure and start promoting a donation match

Whatever partnership or matching gift you lined up earlier now needs to go public. The following go further on activating and structuring a match for maximum effect:

Has a match been secured and is it being promoted yet?

NO
Don't forget promotion
YES

The linked resources give setup details, but promotion matters just as much. Put the match amount and deadline at the top of your Campaign Page, not buried in the copy. Pair it with the kind of urgency language and real examples shown in Last-minute GivingTuesday campaign ideas, which profiles several nonprofits that have done this well. (1) Do you have a major-donor program?
Unlocking Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Giving on-demand webinar covers capturing larger gifts alongside a standard match.
(2) Make final language and design tweaks
One-month countdown: small actions to big GivingTuesday wins and the call-to-action and social-proof examples in Last-minute GivingTuesday campaign ideas are good sources for last-mile adjustments.

⛵️ Week 12: the final countdown

This is it, the point where 11 weeks of flow reach full force. All that you’ve built up to now gets executed in a single day. The smoothest GivingTuesday is one where everything is prepared and scheduled in advance.

Priority action: build your hour-by-hour communication schedule for GivingTuesday

Phase 2 of the 4-Phase Game Plan PDF lays this out directly:

  • an 8 am launch email
  • a noon momentum email with a live progress update
  • a 5 pm social reel or live update
  • a 7-8 pm final-push email
  • plus all-day board and volunteer amplification.

Has your day-of schedule been built yet?

NO
Follow the PDF's timeline
YES
Strengthen the plan you have
Use the timeline as a template, layering in the multi-channel ideas it suggests: Instagram countdown stickers, your Text-to-Donate/QR code in bios and stories, and a live donation feed that uses Live Display. (1) Get inspired!
Read a previous year's Today's the (GivingTues)day! for tone and real-time inspiration. If a live feed isn't part of your plan yet, Why Live Display should be part of all fundraising events makes the case for adding one.
(2) Make sure donor support is ready
It should be ready before volume hits. The FAQ section on Give Lively's GivingTuesday page responds to the donation errors, receipt questions and refund requests your team is most likely to field.

⛵️ The pivot to year-end

GivingTuesday ends at midnight. The flow doesn't. Donor relationships keep moving well past the day itself, and what you do during the 24 to 48 hours after matters as much as anything you did to get there.

Priority action: send a thank-you and stewardship sequence

Phase 3 of the 4-Phase Game Plan PDF and Pivot to end-of-year giving: the story isn't over on GivingTuesday frame this as retain, re-engage and reignite, the three things stewardship needs to accomplish in sequence.

Is that follow-up ready to go out yet?

NO
Follow the PDF's cadence
YES
Strengthen the plan you have
It's a good model, including:
* an immediate automatic acknowledgment
* a personalized thank-you the next morning
* an "it's not too late" email to non-donors on day two or three
* a gratitude recap post the following week.
(1) Think about long-term retention
The From Updates to Engagement and From Transactions to Trust on-demand webinars and PDF guides go further on longer-term retention strategy beyond the first thank-yous.
(2) Move on to the December push itself
Phase 4 of the PDF, along with How to transition to end-of-year fundraising and Turning giving season success into recurring giving help capture GivingTuesday's momentum and channel it into a sustained year-end campaign.
